About

ROFLcopter is an Internet slang term used as a superlative of the abbreviation ROFL ("rolling on the floor laughing"). Like the slang term Lollerskates, ROFLcopter inspired a GIF animation of an ASCII helicopter with spinning "ROFL" blades.

Origin

According to an Urban Dictionary[1] submission by user Brother Laz, the word "ROFLcopter" originated in a web forum for the online strategy game Warcraft III as a slang term for the gyrocopter flying machine unit, which were often mass-produced by players for trolling purposes. On November 1st, 2004, the earliest known use of the term on the Inc Gamers Warcraft III forum[3] about strategies against various Warcraft III units was posted by user SteniS in a thread.

01-11-04, 12:17 AM #1 Mass Dhawks, anyone? Stenis Member I attached a new replay to my "ROFLcopter" thread in the replay forums... I figured out for a while ago that the only thing NE has that counters dhawks is archer... (well FoK also but that's a hero skill requiring that the NE player got warden)... Join Date: May 2004 Location: Malmö, Sweden Posts: 1,159 I've lost a few times against dryad/bears-tech so i though that gryphons wouldn't kill the dryads... but woot about our hawks... they actually have decent PIERCING damage... so they will own dryads... and then the bears are ground-melee so obviously I'l own them too... Anyone else tried this? quot

A Wikipedia[5] entry for "Roflcopter" by user Grue claims that the term originated on the flash website Newgrounds, but does not provide a citation as evidence.
